Over the years, I have received many requests to simplify our pro-ration schedule for per diems&daily housing allowances.

 

I’m happy to announce that our payroll department can now pro-rate daily per diems and allowances based on the number of hours you work in a week! The new system is a straight forward, hourly pro-ration.

 

For example:

5 day per diem @ $39 per day = $195 weekly per diem

$195 divided by 40 hours per week = $4.875 hourly equivalent

If someone is in a speech language pathology job for 38 hours per week, she will receive 38 hours x $4.875 = $185.25 If this speech language pathology professional works 40 hours, she will receive the full $195 weekly per diem

 

Another example:

7 day per diem @ $39 per day = $273 weekly per diem

$273 divided by 40 hours per week = $6.825 hourly equivalent

If one of our physical therapy assistants works 38 hours, she will receive 38 hours x $6.825 = $259.35. If therapy assistants

work 40 hours, they will receive the full $273 weekly per diem.

This week I will be doing a state spotlight on the entertaining things to do in California, where we have tons of Physical Therapy Jobs, Occupational Therapy Jobs, and Speech Language Pathology Jobs.  We have Allied Health Jobs from Northern California all the way to Southern California. 

On the weekend, I would recommend taking a short boat ride from Long Beach or San Pedro to Catalina Island, which takes about one hour.  Catalina Island is located about 22 miles off the coast of Southern California.  The weather during the winter is typically about 65 degrees.  It is a quaint, tranquil island that offers many different activities such as dining, shopping and sightseeing.  Or keep it local with the over 110 city beaches in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County. 

If the serene ambiance is not your speed and you are seeking something a little more fast paced, perhaps the over 250 shops, shopping districts, and malls in the state will excite you with the variety offered by all of these stores.  One of the more well-known upscale shopping districts is Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.  For outlet stores you may want to visit those in Monterrey, Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.

Now, we cannot forget the over 400 wineries in California from Mendocino, Napa to Sierra Foothills.

There are amusement parks such as Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, Marine World in Vallejo, and Disneyland located in Anaheim.

For the culinary enthusiasts there are over 70,000 restaurants in the state.  One of the trendiest in Santa Monica is Border Grill.

No matter what your hobbies or interests are, California offers some type of entertainment and activity for everyone.  Rehab therapists do have another choice in travel destination for their next assignment....Beautiful California.

Getting the Most from Your Rehab Travel Career

Part V:  Interviewing with the Hospital

Working as a traveling physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech language pathologist is a tremendously exciting way to earn a living. Seeing the country; working a variety of clinical settings; in many ways it can’t be beat. In order to achieve this lifestyle, it is important that you do the work necessary to set yourself up for the perfect assignment. In this article, we’ll discuss your interview with the hospital, skilled nursing facility or other acute care centers.

The first step in preparing for any traveling therapist assignment is to do your research. It is important that you not only understand the position and all it involves, but also prepare to demonstrate your best qualities and to have your answers planned for those tricky interview questions. While you may have an idea of the job and its details, you need to spend some time with your recruiter to get the full view of the job at hand.

What to Expect:
When interviewing for any allied health jobs, there are several expectations and recommendations that you must understand before actually going to the interview. It is important to employers to see interviewees that are not only aware of their own skills and benefits that they bring to the table, but that they also have pertinent information about the position and company that they are interviewing with. To insure that you meet these interviewing expectations, you must understand the position and its expectations, as well as what the hospital is looking for in a candidate.

Every day we hear of disastrous financials news. I have many friends and collegues affected by the downturn.  I feel very fortunate to be in the booming industry. Allied Health Jobs, and Rehabilitation jobs specifically, are on the rise. A few weeks back, I shared the growth expectancy of Physical therapy jobs at 27% over the next 8 years. Occupational therapy jobs and speech langugage pathology jobs are also on the rise and expected to grow at 23% and 11%, respectively from 2006 to 2016.

The first question everyone asks about the acquisition is: what will happen to MDI Medical?

MDI Medical is operating as a separate division, just as we always have. Rather than being owned by MDI Group Inc., an IT staffing company, we are now owned by Cirrus Inc., a health care staffing company. Our management team is the same, and everyone who was employed by the "old" MDI Medical is employed by the "new" MDI Medical.

Our new owner, Cirrus Inc., also owns Cirrus Medical Staffing, a top-10 ranked nurse staffing company. Cirrus Inc. also owns Medtivia, a health care staffing company that specializes in bringing Filipino health care professionals to the U.S. in occupational therapy jobs, PT jobs, speech therapy jobs, and nursing jobs. How will this affect you? Well, first and foremost, it will mean more therapy jobs due to a larger client base. Beginning in October, it also means weekly pay! And, beginning next payroll, it means 2x the match on the 401k. (More on this later.)

I have worked with a lot of Speech Language Pathologists since I have started placing traveling therapists her at MDI, and there are several things that every SLP should keep in mind while looking for an assignment. Typically, the market for speech language pathology jobs is weighted toward school-based SLP jobs and skilled nursing facilities. In some areas, we see hospital positions for SLP travelers, but there are things you need to keep in mind if you're looking for your next assignment in a hospital.

Most acute care hospitals require an SLP that is familiar with MBS. MBS, or Modified Barium Swallow, is a technique that many of our acute care hospital assignments utilize on a daily basis. If you do not have experience with MBS, help your recruiter represent you properly by letting him or her know what skills you have that are similar such as other swallowing studies) or how much experience you have observing MBS if you don't have much hands-on time with them.

Another skill you can gain major points for having while looking for travel therapy jobs is experience with Vital Stim. If you have a lot of experience with Vital Stim, you will have a better chance at landing that clinical position.

I understand a lot of SLP travelers out there work in the school systems during the winter and pick up assignments for the summer breaks. Keep these requirements in mind next time you're looking for your next speech therapy job, they could save you a lot of time in the long run.
