I recently went on a road trip from Atlanta out to Kansas City, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the Midwest. I can see why quite a few of our traveling Physical and Occupational Therapist like to head out that way. If you are a traveling allied health specialist who likes sports, Kansas City has a Power and Light District full bars and restaurants where you can watch the games. I love my job here at MDI Medical, but there are days when I feel stressed and worn out by the time I get home. I'm sure many of you traveling therapists feel the same way when you get home from your OT Jobs, PT Jobs and SLP Jobs. Here are a few tips on relieving stress I found at WebMD:
(-) Writing- There is evidence that writing about your stressful events can actually help relieve the stress you are feeling. Write for about 10-15 minutes per day about the things that are worrying you or are stressful to you at the time. Doctors sometimes suggest keeping a stress journal, so you can track the sources of stress in your life and find ways to cope with them.
(-) Expressing your feelings- Talk with family, friends, coworkers or a counselor about how you are feeling. Laughing and crying are also natural ways to release tension and stress.
(-)Physical Activity- exercise is proven to reduce stress, especially aerobic exercise (walking, running, bicycling, swimming, etc).
(-)Doing something you enjoy- A meaningful activity helps relieve tension. Things such as gardening, art, volunteer work...anything you consider an enjoyable hobby.
After a long day on at your rehabilitation jobs, take a few minutes to try out these tips to relieve your tension and stress, so you can return to your job as a physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist feeling refreshed and stress free!

This week I will be doing a state spotlight on the entertaining things to do in California, where we have tons of Physical Therapy Jobs, Occupational Therapy Jobs, and Speech Language Pathology Jobs. We have Allied Health Jobs from Northern California all the way to Southern California.
On the weekend, I would recommend taking a short boat ride from Long Beach or San Pedro to Catalina Island, which takes about one hour. Catalina Island is located about 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. The weather during the winter is typically about 65 degrees. It is a quaint, tranquil island that offers many different activities such as dining, shopping and sightseeing. Or keep it local with the over 110 city beaches in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County.
If the serene ambiance is not your speed and you are seeking something a little more fast paced, perhaps the over 250 shops, shopping districts, and malls in the state will excite you with the variety offered by all of these stores. One of the more well-known upscale shopping districts is Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. For outlet stores you may want to visit those in Monterrey, Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.
Now, we cannot forget the over 400 wineries in California from Mendocino, Napa to Sierra Foothills.
There are amusement parks such as Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, Marine World in Vallejo, and Disneyland located in Anaheim.
For the culinary enthusiasts there are over 70,000 restaurants in the state. One of the trendiest in Santa Monica is Border Grill.
No matter what your hobbies or interests are, California offers some type of entertainment and activity for everyone. Rehab therapists do have another choice in travel destination for their next assignment....Beautiful California.

Getting the Most from Your Rehab Travel Career
Part V: Interviewing with the HospitalWorking as a traveling physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech language pathologist is a tremendously exciting way to earn a living. Seeing the country; working a variety of clinical settings; in many ways it can’t be beat. In order to achieve this lifestyle, it is important that you do the work necessary to set yourself up for the perfect assignment. In this article, we’ll discuss your interview with the hospital, skilled nursing facility or other acute care centers.

The first step in preparing for any traveling therapist assignment is to do your research. It is important that you not only understand the position and all it involves, but also prepare to demonstrate your best qualities and to have your answers planned for those tricky interview questions. While you may have an idea of the job and its details, you need to spend some time with your recruiter to get the full view of the job at hand.
What to Expect:When interviewing for any allied health jobs, there are several expectations and recommendations that you must understand before actually going to the interview. It is important to employers to see interviewees that are not only aware of their own skills and benefits that they bring to the table, but that they also have pertinent information about the position and company that they are interviewing with. To insure that you meet these interviewing expectations, you must understand the position and its expectations, as well as what the hospital is looking for in a candidate.

I know that all of you are very busy on your travel therapy jobs, but you shouldn’t forget to take some time for yourselves to relax. My favorite place to go when I have free time is the movie theater! No matter where you are on your travel assignment, you should be able to find one close by. Here are some big titles in theaters right now:
Burn After Reading- Looking for laughs? This comedy is packed with big names such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton.
Nights in Rodanthe- If romance is on your mind, this is the movie to see. Based on the book by Nicolas Sparks (who also wrote The Notebook), starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane.
Lakeview Terrace- This movie is for the thrill seekers. Samuel L. Jackson stars as a tightly wound police officer who harasses his neighbors until they decide to fight back.
So, when you’ve finished a long day on your OT Jobs, PT Jobs or SLP Jobs, take time to unwind at the movies!

Every day we hear of disastrous financials news. I have many friends and collegues affected by the downturn. I feel very fortunate to be in the booming industry. Allied Health Jobs, and Rehabilitation jobs specifically, are on the rise. A few weeks back, I shared the growth expectancy of Physical therapy jobs at 27% over the next 8 years. Occupational therapy jobs and speech langugage pathology jobs are also on the rise and expected to grow at 23% and 11%, respectively from 2006 to 2016.

City Spotlight Salinas, California
This week the City Spotlight is in Salinas, California and we have tons of physical therapy jobs, occupational therapy jobs and speech pathology jobs.
Imagine watching a sunset the color of fine amber, comforting in a cool summer breeze, while sipping a glass of wine made from locally grown grapes. It sounds like heaven on earth, and you can find it in beautiful Salinas, California.
Located in Monterey County along the northern coast of California, Salinas is close to Monterey Bay, where the weather is the envy of the nation. With winter lows typically in the 60’s and summer highs reaching the mid-70’s, Salinas offers the perfect year-round weather to enjoy golf, tennis, biking, and many other outdoor activities. Just a short hop to Monterey Bay, visiting Salinas provides opportunities to soak up the sun and enjoy a walk on the beach, visit the Monterey Bay aquarium, or enjoy boating, kayaking, scuba diving, and surfing.
Upcoming featured events in the pristine beauty of Salinas….
California Rodeo- the Rodeo is four days of raucous competition among top professional cowboys and cowgirls. Take in bareback bronc and bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, cattle cutting and barrel racing at its finest along with barbecues, parades and country western entertainment.
The California International Airshow- is the premier aviation event on the West Coast. Top jet teams like The Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and Canadian Snowbirds perform for crowds of 80,000 each year. Other flying exhibitions, aerobatics and dynamic ground shows thrill audiences of all ages.
The Steinbeck Festival-is a four-day event including lectures, panels, walking tours of Salinas, bus tours to Steinbeck sites of interest and stage performances. The annual theme changes, each year focusing on a new element of Steinbeck’s literature and works.
The nearby Monterey Peninsula is also home to a number of world-famous annual events including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Winemaker’s Celebration, Scottish Games and Celtic Festival, Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament.

Two weeks ago, I attended a conference for Healthcare Staffing organizations. There was a lot of discussion around rehabiliation jobs and much about the outlook for the physical therapists. If you are a therapist, you know the demand is great from all of the phone calls you’re getting from companies and facilities offering therapy jobs!
I thought I’d share some stats from the Bureau of Labor: Physical therapists held about 173,000 PT jobs in 2006 and the future for growth looks even brighter. Employment is expected to grow a whopping 27% from 2006 to 2016. There's not many careers out there that can tout that kind of growth opportunity
What’s driving this growth?
- An increase in the elderly population that will increases the demand for therapy treatments;
- Baby-boomers are entering prime age for heart attacks and strokes, increasing the demand for cardiac and physical rehab;
- Advanced technologies to save more children born with birth defects;
- And an increased interest in health promotion.
If you are interested in advancing your skills or exploring the country, now is a great time to travel with demand for therapists far out reaching supply. MDI Medical has opportunities throughout the country.

On any given weekday, I probably speak with anywhere from two to twenty physical therapists in my efforts to match candidates with our current physical therapy jobs. We all know what a physical therapist does in their day to day activities, I wanted to take a moment to give everyone a lesson on the history of physical therapy. For help with this blog, I've turned to my good friend and occasionally accurate research partner, wikipedia.org.
According to the wikipedia entry for physical therapy, some of the first known practicioners of physical therapy were practicing around 460 BC. These practicioners (with such superstars among them as Hippocrates and Hector) used hydrotherapy and massage in their treatments.
The earliest documented professional physical therapy group was called the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, and was formed by a group of four English nurses in 1894. After the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, many groups in various countries started forming physical therapy groups and educational programs.
By 1911, Reed College in Portland, OR started graduating students as "Reconstruction Aides," which were America's first physical therapy professionals. Throughout the 40s and 50s, physical therapy grew by leaps and bounds (pardon the pun) and started to break out of the traditional hospital setting and into a new arena of practice known as orthopedics.
In 1974, specialization for physical therapy was finally brought about by the orthopedic section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Although physical therapy is relatively new on the scene when compared to other medical practices, we have seen an exponential grown in demand for this skillset. Whether you are working in a skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, or ICU, keep in mind that the services you provide as a staff therapist or physical therapist traveler are invaluable to the families of your patients.
From all of us here at MDI Medical, keep up the great work!

A former Physical Therapy Assistant has been using Physical Therapists personal information to apply for jobs in North Carolina. She was hired by a competitor (who thought she was a Physical Therapist) for travel physical therapy jobs between August 4-22nd in western North Carolina. She has since surrendered her PTA license and is seeking professional help. See more info
here.
It's a scary proposition. But it shows why credentialing is so important. If you're applying for traveling therapy jobs at MDI Medical, keep in mind that our credentialing process is strict for good reason.
If you're a client or a hiring manager, PLEASE check photo ID and licensure when meeting any new employee. We credential our Physical Therapists well. We verify licenses, check photo IDs, and run comprehensive background checks; however, we need your help in ensuring the person who's standing in front of you is the same person who passed our credentialing checks.
